Travel Intelligence & Alerts
What kind of expert guidance is provided?
Outroad highlights the issues travelers are most likely to encounter in each destination and explains what they may mean in practical terms.
Guidance may cover crime, scams, cyber issues, transportation, protests, local laws, health concerns, natural hazards, surveillance, arbitrary detention, and other conditions that could affect where you go or how you prepare.
What types of incidents does Outroad monitor?
Outroad monitors incidents across six main categories:
- Crime: Theft, scams, violent crime, cyber fraud, and other criminal activity.
- Security: Terrorism, armed conflict, political instability, and significant security operations.
- Protest: Demonstrations, strikes, riots, road closures, and civil unrest.
- Health: Disease outbreaks, contaminated food or water, medical shortages, and other public-health concerns.
- Environment: Hurricanes, earthquakes, wildfires, flooding, extreme heat, and severe weather.
- Travel: Transportation disruptions, infrastructure failures, power outages, border restrictions, evacuations, and other events that may affect a journey.
How often is your data updated?
Incident alerts are refreshed throughout the day as new information becomes available. Safety Scores are reviewed at least monthly and may be updated sooner when a major event meaningfully changes local conditions. Destination guidance is also reviewed as circumstances evolve.

Safety Scores
How do the Safety Scores work?
An Outroad Safety Score is a 1-10 index that helps you compare the relative safety of a city or neighborhood. A score of 10 indicates generally safer conditions, while a score of 1 indicates substantially greater risk.
Safety Scores are a guide, not a guarantee. Conditions can change quickly, and no score can account for every incident, location, or individual circumstance. For a fuller picture, review the category scores, current alerts, destination guidance, and official travel advice before making decisions.
Why do some countries have more Safety Scores than others?
Coverage depends on the availability and reliability of local information. Major cities and frequently visited areas generally have stronger data coverage, while some rural or less-documented locations may not yet have a score.
How are Safety Scores determined?
Safety Scores are calculated using a standardized methodology across seven dimensions of traveler safety. The model combines structural indicators - such as crime, conflict, healthcare capacity, infrastructure, and local laws - with recent incidents, unrest, health alerts, and travel disruptions.
Inputs are weighted by source reliability, recency, and severity, then adjusted for data quality and normalized to a consistent 1-10 scale. Scores are reviewed for anomalies and significant changes before publication and are never based on a single source or event.
What categories are included in the Safety Score?
The main Safety Score is based on seven categories:
- Personal Safety
- Theft & Scams
- Unrest & Strikes
- Women's Safety
- Healthcare & Disease
- LGBTQ+ Safety
- Travel Infrastructure
Together, these categories provide a broader view of the conditions that may affect different travelers.
What does Personal Safety mean?
Personal Safety reflects exposure to violent crime, armed conflict, and other direct threats to travelers. It considers homicide and violent-crime trends, conflict activity, states of emergency, and the broader security environment.
What data sources are used?
Outroad uses a combination of recent incident reporting, government information, public-health data, crime statistics, research, reputable news coverage, and validated historical data.
When information is limited, inconsistent, or difficult to verify, additional quality checks are applied before an assessment is published.
Can I compare scores across countries?
Yes. Outroad uses a consistent, normalized scoring framework, allowing you to compare the relative risk of cities and neighborhoods across different countries.
Because every destination is different, comparisons are most useful when considered alongside the category scores, destination guidance, and current alerts.
